Botanic Garden Open Day

9 December 2018

Hello everyone,

First of all, many thanks to everyone who participated in the special Open Day and Workshops at the  Barrocal Botanic garden and Quinta da Figueirinha last Sunday. We are considering a regular programme of Open Days at the garden and I will keep you informed of dates. I have attached the plant lists for the various zones at the Botanic Garden, if you would like any more info on this, please let me know.

Some of you were interested to know about bulb suppliers and it is not too late to try and get some spring flowering bulbs. You can order from the company below for delivery to a UK address for a freight company and onward transport to the Algarve. We can recommend using Algarve Express www.algarveexpress.com but you may have your own preferred freight company. Their costs are very reasonable and depend on the weight of the parcel. You will have to collect the bulbs from their depot in the Algarve. I have attached a very basic list of recommended bulbs for your guidance.

I have just received news of special offers on spring flowering bulbs from a company we have used before for MGAP orders. J. Parker Dutch Bulbs Wholesale <wholesale@news.dutchbulbs.co.uk>

You can see details on their web site at https://www.jparkers.co.uk/latest-offers   and also for their wholesale site for larger orders at https://www.dutchbulbs.co.uk/c-u/special-offers/

There is currently no restriction on bulbs or garden plant movements within the EU from commercial sources.

There is also a wonderful seed offer available from our international partner organisations as I mentioned at the workshop. The link for information on this is http://www.mediterraneangardeninginternational.org/SeedEx.htm

In addition to all of these goodies, I have just received news of a wonderful seed supplier based in Athens, Greece. We have put his lists onto our MGAP web site and you can see his Garden Plants, Bulbs and Salvia lists here http://www.mediterraneangardeningportugal.org/LibertoDiarioSeeds.html

There is also a very good talk on Bulbs, Corms and Rhizomes for Mediterranean Gardens available on our web site

http://www.mediterraneangardeningportugal.org/JF_video.html

have fun with your seeds and bulbs !

best wishes, Rosie
